Oh, you were brave, a throw away comment I still hear after homebirthing my son 2 and a half years ago. I usually just smile and say how wonderful it was, but sometimes I do actually take time out of MY day to explain exactly why I did it and why I am so very grateful that I did. I would never say to a hospital homebirthing mum, Oh you are brave.... and yet this seems an ok thing to say to me on my personal decisions. Irks the hell out of me. What have people said to you, when they have heard that you want a homebirth , or have had one. Just to add, that people that knew me, would never have dared to question my authority on my body!! LOL!

Yep, have also been told that I'm brave. That just results in me suggesting that my alternative was to birth on the roadside had I planned a hospital birth or follow up with how fast Stephi's arrival was... but then, I'm evil! I think the worst thing is the assumption that having a homebirth with siblings involved will stuff them up. Mind you, I wasn't sure how I felt about it until planning my own HB Mumma to 3 girls:
AJ (04) - public hospital GP (07) - private hospital SB (09) - homebirthed

I get that too. I also get these comments- *OMG are you crazy? *What would happen if something went wrong? Your baby or you could have died!! *I could NEVER do that!! *It would not be a good thing for a child to watch(this came from the OB at the hospital when we asked if we could have 2 of our kids there if I had a hospital birth. Little did he know all of our kids were there for the birth at home and they were fine!!) *JAMI*...Wife to Craig, mum to 5 gorgeous ratbags!! Also a DOULA!! I get it a lot, when I'm chatting about Oliver's birth. I generally respond with "Oh, no, you're the brave one.. you wouldn't catch ME in a hospital" And then natter on about how statistically a home birth is far safer, and has much better outcomes (Physically and mentally) for mum. or similar - but that's me - you'd be hard pressed to shut me up when I'm asleep! Breaking down the myths of homebirth dangers is an important thing to do. I have a friend at uni who had 2 homebirths overseas, and she said to me one day in conversation "I think you could do it Renee" and I said i was planning a HB if I fell again and she said "You were made to birth your baby at home" I got gooseys, best comment ever ! :) Mumma to Beautiful Kaele - Nov 2007 - baker to a gorgeous March bubba, who will be arriving in my arms at home
