With respect to home birth we really are the lucky state. We have a fantastic program that you can apply to in order to deliver your babe in the most welcoming environment of all, your home.

http://www.cmwa.net.au/

This is a great place to start when looking for information.

I was put onto this program by Kiera within days of finding out about my third pregnancy and didn't look back from there. The midwives are amazing and wonderful and everything you could hope for. Not only are they a fantastic support during pregnancy and birth but you can see them again 3 months down the track and get the same wonderful reaction. My midwife is definitely someone I will be staying in touch with and my two elder daughters adore her as well

just to add a bit more Community Midwifery WA, is a publically funded midwifery program, run through King Edward Memorial Hospital.

At this stage, the program supports women to homebirth ONLY if they are deemed low risk by the hospital's policy (i.e. single delivery, no VBAC, no complications)

If you wanted to HBAC, or Homebirth twins, you'd need to look into an independent midwife.

Even further clarification, the CMP is the Community Midwifery Program - ie the midwives.

CMWA (Community Midwifery WA) is a not-for-profit organisation who handle the administration of the CMP and who provide childbirth education and manage wonderful resource centres.

CMWA offer independent antenatal education including Active Birth Workshops, Preparation for Childbirth classes. They have outside educators come in regularly and run workshops on such things as hypnobirthing, "what is my baby telling me", baby signing, baby massage. They also run a Choices in Childbirth information session monthly for anyone wanting to know their birth options in Perth.

CMWA also have a midwifery educator (Ruth) who is based at the office who is available to call anytime if you need to chat or ask questions about your pregnancy.

Many people don't know that CMWA have a lactation consultant named Lorraine Runkel who works out of North Fremantle on Wednesdays. She takes hourly appointments for breastfeeding help and advice - and can also give you a one-on-one breastfeeding workshop prior to the birth of your baby. It costs only $30 an hour to see Lorraine - an absolute bargain and she is fabulous.

Annual membership at CMWA costs just $10 or $20, depending on whether you are employed.

Thanks Cath!!

And their resource centres are FABULOUS... the libraries are definitely worth a sticky beak.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth today, and she's lovely!
