Personally, I've only used TENS for physiotherapy.. But a TENS machine is an electronic advice that emits a buzzing sensation, which feels pleasant and helps take the edge off contractions.
TENS can be bought on eBay for around $200 AUD - be sure to get TENS for labour (one brand is called LabourTENS)

Or hired from www.labourtens.com.au

Some hospitals now rent them out too.

I know of several women who are big fans of TENS machines in early labour.

On my IM's advice I've booked one to use in this labour.. she said it's good for early labour and since mine was especially long with Trystan it might help me get some more rest in the early days.. hoping it doesn't take as long this time but it's good to have something I can use when lying down just incase. Showers and walking are great, but tiring!

I've booked mine through the hospital for $70 which includes an instruction class on how to use it.

Remind me to give you feedback on it in a month or so :)
