Despite labouring in three very different environments there was one thing that worked for me each time and that was water. With each labour I spent an initial period walking and rocking and just generally moving until I reached a point where I needed something more. At that point I jumped in the shower and that was where I stayed until I needed to push for both of my first 2 labours. My third labour I remained in the shower to deliver our daughter - my intent had been to deliver in the birth pool but it wasn't ready in time and there was no way I could have moved that far anyway at that point! I used water too. The bath in early labour, until I was terrified of getting stuck. Then hot towels wrung out in water. Then the magnificent pool. The pool was bliss... the only thing was, I wish I'd had the presence of mind to move a bit. I spent 6 hours of labour squatting at the edge, not quite game to move.... until my midwife suggested it, but Olly was born about 45 minutes later :) Mummy to Connor (07/07) birthed in hospital - my "Inspiration" baby, and Oliver (02/09) Birthed Peacefully at home in water - my "Best poo ever"

Water, and HypnoBirthing techniques, deep breathing and concentrating on producing a resonating hum (don't know where it came from, it wasn't planned or practiced!)

HOT water!! For some reason it relaxes me!! Also having a great support team...just having people talking to me takes away some of the pain cos it kept my mind on something else. Water, yes, in between it was gorgeous to relax in. It did make my labour more intense though. So the other things for me were - my beautiful midwife's hand stroking my lower back - I didn't realise what it was doing for me until she stopped to listen to my baby's heartbeat - I quickly let her know to get her hand back there :) Vocalisation! I couldn't get through without vocalisation, that was the thing that did it for me.

Before I got to the hospital and got all drugged up, it was vocalisation for me all the way. Concentrating on keeping the tone the same right the way through the contraction. And wheat bags on my lower back. One in the microwave, one on my back! Amanda Mummy to Sage - 2 years - C-Section Delivery Planning a Home BIRTH - Due in Autumn 2010!

Vocalisation also - I distinctly remember a few occasions where either Lisa, or my midwife reminded me to keep the tone low and deep. Had I had the courage to vocalise more in hospital with Connor I think I would have managed the pain better. But I found I was fighting the contractions there. At home, I felt as though I could welcome them and ride throught them. So that would be my next point: Environment.... I needed to be somewhere I felt safe and confident. Oh definately environment! I went from vocalising at home and in the car quite loudly, to keeping it all inside once we got in the hospital. Didn't want anyone to think I was a drama queen now did I! Amanda Mummy to Sage - 2 years - C-Section Delivery Planning a Home BIRTH - Due in Autumn 2010!

Its the scientology approach to birthing - you should be able to deliver without making a sound I don't know that environment made a huge difference to me. I was no more vocal at home than I had been in hospital. I think I retreat into myself to remain focused during labour so pretty much cut everything else out One more thing that I think helped me in each labour was remembering something one of my SILs said to me when we were both pregnant with our first child. She told me she wasnt concerned about the labour as she knew that would be over at some point but was more concerned abotu preparing herself for parenthood as that would stretch through many years Mumma to 3 girls:

Funny thing about vocalisation, I was so quiet when I birthed in hospital. During my pregnancy with Cooper I told everyone I was a quiet birther...how wrong was I lol. At home I felt comfortable enough to groan and grunt through the contractions. *JAMI*...Wife to Craig, mum to 5 gorgeous ratbags!! Also a DOULA!! Water Water Water! I learnt so much about the importance and physicality of the voice. Birthing at home in the middle of the night allowed me to be comfortable vocalising without inhibition.
I think simplicity and intimacy of a closed, dark environment allowed me to focus deeply. Focus and surrender are both fundamental in pain relief.

Counting for me, while I was at home, I counted with OH, until the contraction was over, not counting how long it lasted for (As he was secretly timing them) but more just so I could do something else. I Spent AGES in our bath at home, laying down, that was bliss, when we got to hospital I rocked, and perferred to stand on my tippy toes and rock? Then I got in the bath there, squatted and sung to jimmy barnes :D Mumma to Beautiful Kaele - Nov 2007 - baker to a gorgeous March bubba, who will be arriving in my arms at home
