Did/will you undergo testing for GD and/or GBS? I had both, as is the standard, when I went through the hospital system with Trystan. This time I've looked much further into both, and decided not to have either. In my case I don't see the need. With GD, I'm low risk and I think it's over diagnosed. With GBS, the fact that we all have it at one stage or another and that it comes and goes, makes testing a bit defunct I think. The risk of it being passed to babe even if mother does have it is minimal, and pumping us both full of ABs 'just incase' does not sit well with me. If baby contracts GBS at birth I've been assured that we would know, and could seek treatment then. Anyway what is everyone else doing? Thoughts? Feelings? Leah - Mumma to T (c-sec) and S (my HBAC!), wife to R. non-vaxxing, cloth nappying, co-sleeping, breastfeeding, baby-wearing, student naturopath.

Hi Leah, I skipped GBS, on the basis that even if I did have it, our family doesn't do antibiotics, unless it's life and death. If Olly had displayed signs of GBS when he was born, we would have dealt with it appropriately then - but given how we'd handle things, knowing the results of the test wouldn't have changed our course of action. I flatly refuse to test for GD - having done a lot of reading that suggests it's a "diagnosis waiting for a disease" - and in most cases, sensible high protein diet, and moderate excercise are enough to ensure that you're healthy. Again, if I had symptoms that warranted looking into it further, I would have done so - but I saw no need in my pregnancy So no, I didn't test. :)  Mummy to Connor (07/07) birthed in hospital - my "Inspiration" baby, and Oliver (02/09) Birthed Peacefully at home in water - my "Best poo ever"

I had testing for both. I had GD with my 3rd,4th and 5th babies...I ate healthy and maintained things and had pretty average sized babies. My 2nd(I didnt have GD with her) weighed alot more then the last 3. I also think that the test is rediculous...of course your going to have a high sugar reading if you drink that highly sweet glucose drink!! As for GBS I did have the test but was negative!! *JAMI*...Wife to Craig, mum to 5 gorgeous ratbags!! Also a DOULA!!

I dont test for anything. GD is hugely over used as a diagnosis..(not disputing your condition Jami) but it is genuine a misunderstanding of women's physiological ability to create a child...same as anemia.... just more reasons to intervene,

I have had GD testing in two pregnancies and both times caused me more stress than was necessary Pregnant with Ashleigh, hubby had gone ahead of me to move interstate, result from GCT comes back slightly high so I have GTT.... perfectly normal result Pregnant with Gabriella, obs states that he doesn't believe in doing it because it causes the mother unneccesary stress and he does urine monitoring anyway Pregnant with Stephani, MW says no need to have test, go for booking in appt at hospital and stupidly do urine test which gives high reading! This is between Chrissy and New Year and I'm still living on junky leftovers. Needless to say my GTT came back fine again but once again, a few days of unneccesary stress I will not have the GD test again GBS.... wasn't done when I had Ashleigh, done routinely with Gabriella and highly discussed when pregnant with Stephi. Ended up having it but knew that if I did have GBS then I didn't have long enough labours to medicate anyway. Decided with MW that it was better to know just in case though There are a lot of tests etc that are performed during pregnancy that I think are overused and unneccesary and just cause more stress for the mum to be Mumma to 3 girls:

Is a hospital allowed to withdraw their care if you dont allow them to carry out certain tests? The one thing I found out during my pregnancy with Cooper is that stress can up your blood sugar level. During stressful periods in my pregnancy I would have high readings even regardless of what I ate. I found if I relaxed before the finger trick test it would be low but if I was stressing about pricking my finger it was higher. I think *if* I was to have another baby I would choose not to have the GTT. *JAMI*...Wife to Craig, mum to 5 gorgeous ratbags!! Also a DOULA!!
