I was thinking today, how easy it is to let things just happen, through being busy or apathy or being just too damned tired. I'd love to know how every one is actively engaging in the current homebirthing crisis? I WANT SOOOO BADLY to Canberra, can;t see it happening so will doing the rally in Perth. I have written emails and attended meetings and ranted and raved to every main stream person I know. How about you?

Definitely ranting and raving and making it heard. Stirred up my dad at the weekend and had to change subjects cos he didn't get it, but his wife did and was fully supportive! Telling everyone that we're going to Canberra and then explaining why and mostly ending up with people onside to join the disgust! can't think what else - jsut drove 4 hours Mumma to 3 girls:
AJ (04) - public hospital GP (07) - private hospital SB (09) - homebirthed

This was the response from one of my emails - it's more positive then the others so far... Quote:Dear Kiera, Thank you for your email dated 7 July to Senator Chris Back raising the issue of home birth and bringing your personal story to his attention. Senator Back is aware of the Maternity Services Review which was released in February 2009. You are correct that the argument is about every woman having the power to choose. This includes a planned home birth for low risk pregnancies using certified professional midwives. If this issue arises, Senator Back will certainly be better informed and will keep your suggestions in mind. I havent done too much atm...my life is hectic with 5 kids(one of which is quite young and demanding), a hubby working away, appointments galore etc... I would have loved to go to the rally in canberra...if my hubby wasnt working away on that week I would have booked a ticket for me and my son and gone across. Instead I will attend the Perth Rally(if they have one) I have signed the petitions that get sent to me(and I have sent them off to other people too). Ive also been speaking to alot of people about the joy of my homebirth and alot agree that it would be sad if midwives would not be insured. *JAMI*...Wife to Craig, mum to 5 gorgeous ratbags!! I've signed petitions and sent emails to Roxon, my nearest Greens representative and my local Federal MP (Jason Wood). I'm also going to Canberra on the very little funds we have!

I've sent emails to senators and Nicola Roxon, signed the online petition and bought a virtual whatsy for the Canberra rally. I won't be able to go to the Perth one. All up I feel I've haven't done much at all.
As I've said in my post introducing myself I'm now focussing my efforts on learning how to play the game. Ranting and raving will make us look like ranters and ravers. I see this issue at times being portrayed in quite a patronising way in the media. I want to learn how to work with the media, how to write for the media so that we can really be heard.
Even if the legislation is passed I am learning that there's always a way around legislation. It's about studying legislation with a fine-tooth comb to identify little holes we can work through.
We need to look long-term to be able to let the public understand the importance of appropriate choice in maternity. I see so many people who don't want to know about birth that isn't highly medicalised. They are fearful and simply quite pissed off at those of us who have loved our births. Until the majority of people understand the issue we will always be ranting and raving on the margins while the AMA gets away with outrageous statements and appalling political acts. Out-lawing Independent Midwifery an "unintended consequence" my arse.

Andrea, While I agree with some of the points you raise, I find the implication that we're all only ranting and raving quite inaccurate. Granted that I did mention that was one of my tactics - It was my poorly chosen words for "Talking to everyone I meet" I wholeheartedly agree that working with the media, and playing the politcal game is the way to go... but you yourself marginalise the majority of women in your statements. Perhaps you could share with us some of your insights into how to 'play the game' - I'm sure it'd help us all. Kiera
I'm not having a go at you, I'm not having a go at anybody, I'm not implying you have chosen any words badly. I've ranted and raved to a couple of people because what is happening is appalling. It's a human reaction.
What I am saying is that we are misrepresented in the media and are being marginalised politically. I want to look at how do we get our message across. I was giving my answer to a post about what I am doing, I've mentioned where I personally am going with this. At no point was there any criticism of anybody else.
I never said people were only ranting and raving. Please read my post again. I hope you will see I have not said what you've imagined. When I write I try to be as clear and articulate as I can and I find it disheartening to see it being read in a way totally different to my intentions. Perhaps it's one of the problems with reading text from people we've never met.
I think we all have different skills and interests to bring to the homebirth community. My concerns are how do I contribute best to something I believe in. I'm impressed with your skills in contributing by creating this website.
To be honest I'm disappointed and bored with hypersensitivity and insularity in some areas of the birthing world.

Fair enough :) As I say, I agree with your points - I obviously misread tone of your post. So again, if you'd like to share how we can better represent ourselves, I'm all ears!!
